Gareth Antigua here – writing from Ancaster, Ontario. This is the first in a series of letters that I will post on the decline and rebirth of America in the first half of the twenty-first century. While I have been associated with the HigherED.zone project for the past twenty years, I have rarely posted in my own voice.

In that light, I should introduce myself. I grew up in the United Kingdom – in a area of West London called Hounslow. I came to America to go to graduate school.
